Sunflower: The legend and its symbolic meaning
Condividi su: Instagram Facebook Twitter

A flower that is certainly the protagonist of the summer is the sunflower. An extraordinary plant from an aesthetic point of view and beyond. In fact, it can be cultivated both for purely ornamental purposes and for food and healing purposes.

The main characteristics of the sunflower

The sunflower is a particularly tall plant, a specimen can reach up to 2 metres. Thanks to its bright yellow color it immediately catches the eye. How many people have not lost their gaze at least once among the beautiful sunflower fields that can be seen in this period.

The main characteristic of the sunflower, which makes it famous, is that it is always oriented towards the sun, this depends on heliotropism or the movement of its plant organs which naturally tend to orient themselves towards the sun. The effect you have is always very spectacular. Sunflowers always look like spectators admiring the sunlight.

It is a very versatile flower. Generally the seeds are planted between March and April and then develop in the summer. It can be grown both in a field and in pots. In both cases it must be placed in a position that allows good sun exposure.

The sunflower, as we have seen, is suitable for various purposes. On the one hand it is a beautiful ornamental flower for floral compositions, on the other its seeds are used in the food sector, as they are very rich in nutrients. In the kitchen, the uses of sunflower seeds are varied and are used as a simple snack or to enrich bread or salad.

The legend of the Sunflower and its meaning

As we have seen for other flowers such as the chrysanthemum e the holly even the sunflower has many legends dedicated to its origin. Let's look at the two most famous ones.

The first tells that one day, in a field, an unpleasant-looking flower was born. Everyone thought he was ugly and no one wanted to be around him. This flower was always alone and sad, spending its days watching the sun shine. He liked that sun so much that, to try to see it more closely, his stem had lengthened. When the sun changed position, the flower followed it with its corolla. One day the sun saw that flower that was always alone and had the story told about him. Struck by that story, the sun embraced him and transformed him into the tallest and brightest flower in the field. A golden colored flower which was called Sunflower due to its friendship with the sun.

The second legend tells of Clizia, a young nymph in love with the god of the Sun. Apollo, feeling flattered, seduced the young woman, but subsequently abandoned her. Due to her desperation, Clizia cried continuously for 9 days in a field, without ever taking her eyes off the sun. Legend has it that her body stiffened and transformed into a stem, her feet became roots and her hair became a yellow corolla. Clizia thus transformed into the beautiful yellow sunflower that admires the sun all day.

From these two legends emerge some meanings that the Sunflower still retains today. In fact, although in ancient Greece it symbolized unrequited love, today the Sunflower has a positive meaning and means positivity. Its yellow color makes it particularly suitable as a gift on the occasion of reaching a professional or personal goal. On the occasion of a graduation or a summer wedding its light color inside a bouquet will bring joy and serenity.
