The meaning of flowers - part I
Condividi su: Instagram Facebook Twitter

Flowers have always accompanied the history of human beings, in every era the floral element has been present within our collective imagination. Many of the ancient Greek myths take inspiration from botany: plants are told in a mysterious, engaging and romantic guise. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, flowers were a symbol of social status and moral virtues, for example the lily is a classic heraldic figure that means royalty and appears in many coats of arms.

The language of flowers

However, the language of flowers as it has been transmitted to the present day derives from the nineteenth century with Florigraphy. A discipline, developed in the 19th century, which has collected all the uses and customs of the past regarding flowers, defining the meaning and the type of message that one wants to express with a flower. In the midst of romanticism, several authors included flowers in their stories, making them elements of important symbolism. A similar language has also been codified in Japan, Hanakotoba defines the language for the oriental world.

All this has been transmitted until today when, despite innovative digital solutions and new technologies, giving a flower is always something that emphasizes a feeling or a particular event towards a person dear to us.

Do you think that flowers are always good and can be given as gifts without distinction? Let's try to understand which flowers can best express our feelings and allow us to give a gift that conveys the message we desire.

A flower for friendship

Friendship is a feeling we all know. From the first years of our life we share experiences with various friends who over time become a point of reference for us. In all cultures of the world, the value of a friend is something extremely important that provides the background and meaning to our social life. Does it seem trivial to give a flower to a friend? No, it's not at all! In fact, it could be an opportunity to underline how much you appreciate him and how important he is to you. If we want to offer a flower to a friend to tell him how much we love him, there are some that express our feeling.

The first on the list is certainly the cornflower. This has different varieties of color (white, yellow, pink, violet) and in the language of flowers it means sincere friendship. If we wish to express our sympathy and benevolence towards a person we can choose wisteria, one of the most beautiful ornamental plants we can choose, thanks to its shades of color ranging from lilac to purple. In the oriental world, this plant has always meant friendship. In the past the emperors of the Rising Sun used to give it as gifts to illustrious guests or on institutional trips to make their friendly intentions clear. Among the flowers dedicated to friendship, let's not forget acacia and freesia which, with their light color, symbolize the pure and uncontaminated feeling that binds two true friends

Flowers dedicated to love

According to the common imagination, flowers are directly connected to love. The strongest and kindest feeling that binds two people, a source of inspiration for poets and writers of all eras, seems to be naturally linked to the floral world.
Which flower to choose to reveal your declaration of love? Without a shadow of a doubt, the first choice falls on the red roses. If we want to tell someone with flowers that we are madly in love with him or her and that we would like him or her to become our partner, a beautiful bouquet of red roses is certainly the preferred choice. The red of her petals represents passion and promises eternal love. As a famous quote said, every rose has its internal lute, to underline the magic of this ever-present flower.

If you want to be more original and go beyond the classic canons (which are always good!), a valid option is the red tulip. Like roses of the same color, red tulips also signify passion. An ancient oriental legend tells that the red tulip was born from the blood shed by a lover who believed he had lost his partner. From this legend the tulip has always been linked to passionate and perfect love.

We have seen that red is often the color of love in flowers, primrose is no exception. It is an extremely delicate flower that is associated with youth and is also used to express love. Precisely because of its fresh meaning it is often linked to first love. But there is not only this color to express love. If you want to do it with pink you can choose carnation! Yes, this softer shade also signifies love. Finally, if you want to go white and make an original choice, choose jasmine. A small and discreet flower with an intense scent that can demonstrate all your attention to your loved one.

Here are some floral suggestions, linked to love and friendship, but the meaning of flowers does not end here... each plant has its own meaning that we can use to communicate a message in different contexts. Are you curious to discover others? Continue following us
