Condividi su: Instagram Facebook Twitter

Today we focus on a very beautiful and ancient plant:heather which comes from South Africa. It belongs to the Ericaceae family which currently has around 700 species. Its seeds are very small and some species can remain on the soil for decades. This plant is called calluna vulgaris and its name derives from the Greek word kalluno, to sweep, because its twigs were broken and joined to create brooms. It is a typically winter plant that adorns our flower boxes all year round.

Erica: the legend

Legends about flowers are always very interesting and fascinating, that of heather in particular. One of the best known ones is taken from the Druidic tradition, it tells the story of Oscar and Malvina. The famous Celtic leader Ossian had a beautiful daughter, Malvina, who had been promised in marriage to the valiant warrior Oscar. Oscar soon left for battle and one day, while Malvina and her father were walking on the cliff, a messenger arrived bringing with him the bad news that Oscar had died in the war. The messenger also delivered Oscar's last gift to his beloved, a bunch of heather. Malvina, saddened, cried on that bouquet of flowers which changed their color from purple to white. From that moment on, the young woman blessed those flowers, exclaiming that they would bring good luck to whoever picked them.

Curiosities about the use of heather

Over the centuries the uses of this plant have been multiple. As previously mentioned, one of these was the creation of brooms for sweeping, in other cases it was used as a mattress. The peculiarity is that the beds were built according to an ancient and primordial idea of aromatherapy. The flowers were in fact positioned towards the head so that they could be smelled while falling asleep. Its purple color was then used to dye fabric. In the medical field this flower helped in the treatment of digestive disorders and insomnia. Finally, its flower is still used to create aromas, soaps and candles.
